Brad and I kicked off this week at the alternative events conference.
The first day involved various speakers from VC’s like Fifth Wall, Global Property Consultancies like Avison Young, Influencers like Anthony Slumbers and Global PropTechs like HQO. The majority of investment funds, data analytics, solutions and tech companies which focus on real estate are all here which is rare. It is a fantastic turn out for a two-day event...on a Monday, which demonstrates how tech is at the top of everyone’s agenda.
The focus of this event is the importance of real estate technology.
Roelof Opperman, Managing Director of Fifth Wall asked "How are people going to make money now or in the future in real estate without operating better? Technology is a key part of this. Technology is constantly creating new efficiencies and enabling positive change".
We then had a talk from Jason Sibthorpe, Principle and President from Avison Young. Jason mentions for them it is all about the technological change and attracting the right talent to future proof the business and that ‘Culture is everything’. Avison Young are one of the many businesses who are hiring data scientists and heads of innovation like Rupert Parker. Combining people from all backgrounds and industries and steering away from the traditional real estate practices is key. Having broad perspectives and diverse skill sets help build the knowledge base and ultimately creative products and services.
As Jason said, ‘Knowledge is power, and power is data’.
This was then shortly backed up after by Reuben Barry at Ecovis, who gave a great insight into innovation across professional services and said, ‘If you are not collecting data and utilising it correctly, there is no point in collecting the data’.
The rest of the day was filled up with networking events, further talks by Dan Hughes, peer to peer discussions and roundtables on hot topics, challenges and solutions. Then a drinks reception and a wonderful dinner with evening entertainment rounded up the day.
The following morning, we started in in the gym with various clients, and after a quick breakfast we had further talks by Alex Bailes, Rupert Parker. These focused on the future direction of travel but also on what the future looks like for property consultancy with Alex Edds, Nick Wright and a couple of other well-known names in the industry giving their insight.
John Avery closed the conference and thanked Steve and Sarah for putting on the fantastic event. It is rare that you gather industry heads for two days to discuss all the hot topics and challenges in such an open and engaging way.
We are looking forward to the next one! Thank you again and looking forward to catching up with everyone soon.
