Hit the gym to get rid of the jet lag and headed to see Jonathan Mills aka Millsy from Osborne Clarke for breakfast. Jonathan Mills is a fellow Brit Abroad who we met at PropTech MIPIM NYC, when we were last out here. Jonathan provides US PropTechs with on the ground and in time zone legal advice and project management on investment and expansion into Europe and Asia. They also have a team that provides this from Asia and EU to US.
If you are looking to expand from the US I couldn’t rate Jonathan more highly. So definitely reach out and he can also show you some great spots around NYC!
After that, I headed up to meet Safi and Amira from Metaprop at Room Service. A delicious Thai restaurant, that Amira recommended. We caught up about what was happening in the market, and chatted through how they both got into VC and how their roles have evolved. I often speak to people who love the idea of working in a VC but do not quite understand that it is bloody hard work and you have to wear a million hats. However, what I found really interesting is the path they both took to get to where they are, and its impressive. It is not the classic MBA, Investment banking, start up route; they both proved themselves in many ways, made their own mark, creative their own story in the ecosystem and got referred to Aaron which just shows how hard work, networking, initiative and drive pays off.
I then went to meet with Andrea Jang for a quick coffee. Andrea fly’s every 10 days around work to speak at an array of different conferences. Andrea’s role is sourcing new investments and growing JLL Sparks portfolio of start-up and to lead growth and integration of JLL Spark’s portfolio companies in the America’s region.
Andrea gave some great advice about how LMRE and I can develop our presence in the US, and recommended some key conferences, but also the importance of cementing and developing relationships out here, which doesn’t happen straight away. Which is why we are delighted to have Xan joining us to head up our US team to be based out in NYC. Xan launched Tessian in the US, before he joined us here at LMRE and can’t wait for him to start straight away in 2020!
Last but not least, I went and met an old friend Tilly Murphy, who has joined Gartner and focuses across USA and EMEA. Gartner is the world’s leading research and advisory company and a member of the S&P 500. They equip business leaders with indispensable insights, advice and tools to achieve their mission-critical priorities today and build the successful organizations of tomorrow. It was interesting to hear what their plans were within Property Technology.
Great day and now to bed!
