How to begin a career in Build to Rent.

In the UK, Build to Rent has been one of the most rapidly expanding and exciting sectors within the property market for a couple of years now. At LMRE Living, we are seeing a continued huge increase in candidates looking to get a role in Build to Rent. These candidates are coming from varied backgrounds – other property roles (for example, lettings or property management), hospitality, retail or even aviation. Candidates are constantly asking how they can break into BTR without any previous experience in the field.

Here are our top tips on how to begin a career in BTR:

Do your research!

BTR is a very attractive sector to work in due to the rapid expansion and progression opportunities. However, it is also very hard work and can often involve working shifts, late or longer hours, weekend work and longer commutes to non-central locations. We would encourage candidates to think through all these factors to decide if a career in BTR is right for them.

Additionally, do your research on BTR and the key investors and operators. It may sound obvious but during interviews, the first question a lot of our clients ask candidates is: ‘What do you know about BTR?’ The more you know about this the better and developed knowledge will help set you apart from other candidates.

Get qualified.

IRPM (Institute of Residential Property Management) now have a BTR specific qualification with varying levels suitable for different levels of experience. The level 2 qualification is a great start for anyone hoping to get a role within BTR. From an interviewer’s perspective, having this on a candidate’s CV reflects a genuine interest in BTR as well as practical knowledge that means you can hit the ground running in your new role. Level 2 can be completed with 6-10 hours of studying so I would highly recommend this as a starting point to all my candidates.

Attend networking events and webinars.

The UKAA (UK Apartment Association) is the official BTR association and being a member is a great way to learn more about the sector as well as network with professionals in the industry. They regularly hold panels, roundtables and networking events and during lockdown they have streamed some very insightful webinars.
