Leveraging PropTech To Get To Net Zero - WiPT Event

27.11.19

Hattie and I had a great evening at the first women in PropTech event, held at the @Iceni Projects offices in Farringdon – a former disused car park and a great use of space!

The evening started off with a few drinks and catching up with our connections, followed by us all sitting down ready for the Q+ A! We were introduced to Iceni projects and to the venue by Dan Jestico who told us all about the transformation of the office from a  disused car park into a fantastic open-plan work space, and highlighted the fact that sustainability doesn’t just come in the form of shiny new buildings, but also in changing and regenerating old and unused spaces.

Nikki Greenberg, the founder of WiPT then spoke about the WiPT community, why it is important and why it is needed. 90% of the leadership roles in PropTech are still held by men. She also highlighted the 5 pillars that the WiPT community stand for.

The keynote speaker of the evening was Sally Jones, head of strategy and investments at British Land. She talked about their co-working brand Storey, their investment in Fifth wall, what they are doing to try to reach net zero in their buildings, and the areas in which we need to see improvement in tech in buildings.

We then moved on to the exciting panel discussion and the questions and answers session! Sarah Ratcliffe moderated the discussion and posed questions to the panel, which included – Alison Webb, Oana Neumayer, Sally Jones, and Julie Hogarth.

They discussed how integrated strategies need to be with regards to net zero, Alison from Lendlease spoke about their Barangaroo development in Sydney which aspires to deliver net zero, and where all food, office, commercial and industrial waste is treated and managed using methods that are climate neutral.

Julie spoke about what they are doing at Regent Street, including being focused on renewable energy, not using landfill, and reducing foodwaste by 25%.

Sally spoke about the steps that landlords need to take in order to embrace net zero, with one of her main points being that you need to understand where you are right now and what you are starting with.

The audience asked some interesting questions, including ‘why has it taken so long for the property sector to react to the climate crisis?’ and ‘what is the hottest tech on the market right now in your opinion?’

All in all, a great evening with interesting insights, great catch ups, and a very cool venue!

Thanks to WiPT for organising and to Iceni for hosting!
